Bekantan or commonly called the Dutch Monkey is endemic animal of Borneo Island (Indonesia, Brunei, and Malaysia). Proboscis is a type of monkey that has a long and large nose character with reddish-brown hair. In scientific language, Bekantan is called Nasalis larvatus. Bekantan in Latin (scientific) called Nasalis larvatus , is in English called Long-Nosed Monkey or Proboscis Monkey . In other countries it is called by several names such as Kera Bekantan (Malaysia), Bangkat (Brunei), Neusaap (Dutch). The people of Kalimantan themselves give some names to this species of long-nosed monkeys such as the Dutch Ape, Pika, Bahara Bentangan, Raseng and Kahau. Proboscis is one of two species of genus Nasalis genus is actually consists of two subspecies namely Nasalis larvatus larvatus and Nasalis larvatus orientalis. Nasalis larvatus larvatus is found in almost all parts of the island of Borneo while Nasalis larvatus orientalis is in the northeastern part of the island of Borneo.
