For about half year, I’ve been toying with the idea of starting the 100 Strangers Project. Now, on a trip to Istanbul, I finally got things going. I met my first stranger Irfan in a side street close to the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul. He was selling fresh-squeezed orange juice and I decided to stop for a quick refreshment. The juice was so delicious that I actually had two glasses. He told me he gets the oranges from Antalya, a coastal city in the South of Turkey. As I wanted to pay, he realized that he ran out of change. He made a gesture that I should take care of his stand. Then he ran off into a store about half a block away and returned a couple of minutes later. Being fascinated by his warmhearted nature, I asked him, if I can take a picture of him. To my surprise, he was very intrigued by my request and immediately started to pose. I shot a couple of images and finally ended up with the one above. As a small gesture of appreciation for “taking” his picture, I gave him an Instax print of the image, which impressed him quite obviously. Although, it was a more than positive experience and I really enjoyed the encounter, I’m a bit sad that we didn’t speak the same language. I would have definitely liked to get to know a bit more about you, Irfan. This picture is #1 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page
