Understory of American beech (Fagus grandifolia) saplings, Columbia County, within the Jakey Hollow Natural Area of Weiser State Forest. Beeches retain their previous season's dead foliage into winter and early spring, adding much-appreciated texture and color to the otherwise drab woods. The leaf colors range from pale yellow-orange to deep orange. Soon, however, the new season's leaf growth will force the dead foliage off the trees.
