This is a Saxon Church, with Norman and Gothic architecture. It is famed for its chained library and the tombs of King Ethelred, the brother of Alfred the Great, as well as the tombs of John Beaufort, Duke of Somerset and his duchess. Also the maternal grandparents of King Henry VII of England. It is built of Dorset Limestone and New Forest Stone. The Minster is dedicated to Saint Cuthburga, sister to Ine, King of the West Saxons, who founded a Benedictine abbey of nuns at the present day minster in circa A.D. 705.
