When walking through Vienna you can stop at any place and start to move in time instead of distance. Like here for instance. Let´s move backwards in time, like - ehm - 1900 years back? Just mud and grassland around me. But wait, if I turn my head left to Northeast I can see in about 260m distance a castrum (roman military camp), about 500m wide and long. All still made out of wood. They just started to build it about 15 years ago and it will take them another 40 years until they will have replaced it all with stone buildings. We are here in the outskirts of the roman empire and around us migration period everywhere. If I tell them that a fire will destroy most of it in about 300 years from now, nobody will believe. Another jump? This time I want to jump about 790 years back from present. A lot of stories skipped. Here we meet Leopold VI, duke of Austria, participant of two crusades in Spain. Francis of Assisi is still living and Leopold wants some of his followers here. Soon there will be a monastery here, still outside of the townwall. You will hear monks praying and singing. They will build a church (see “A church lost it´s hat.”) and 320 years later I would be standing here in the middle of a hospital. Interested in the medicine of the 16th century? Not all what you see you will like. About 438 years ago they started to build the Amalienburg, the yellow house you see at the end of this road, just possible because the “Cilihof”, the house which stood there before burnt down. At beginning it was just one storey high, about 20 years later it already had 3 storeys. Just to name two, Alexander I., the emperor of Russia stayed here and empress Elisabeth (“Sisi”) lived here both just separated through time. But so many more people, feelings and stories are connected to this building. The building on the left is the newest chapter of this place. Not much more than 30 years old. Today it habitats governmental departments. “What a journey!”, and we not even have scraped the surface, but too little time for now. So just by the way: “Enjoy YOUR time!”
