Here is a smattering of images from my first stab at film photography, development and digitization. I didn’t want to upload the images individually because none of them are really stand out images in my opinion. So I made them into a contact sheet. The images are large so if you want to take a better look at them click here. I have a pile of old SLR's laying around that I've never used. When I'm looking for a good deal on old manual focus primes to slap on my mirrorless, I usually end up getting 3 or 4 old primes as part of a kit for under $100. I use the lenses all the time, but the bodies just sit there in a drawer. I always questioned why would someone would use film in this day and age. A few years back I was inside the house and it was -40c outside, I really wanted to go outside and take some photos. I have a fully mechanical SLR so I looked into the cost of film and having it developed and decided it wasn't really worth the cost. So I put the thought in the back of my head. I watch photography videos on youtube all the time and I started to see people developing and digitizing their own negatives. I figured if that was the only hurdle, well then it's not much of a hurdle at all. I tried to shoot a bunch of different stuff with my first roll. I wanted to do some macro, action, portraits, off camera flash, night shots and I also wanted to try shooting in some extreme weather conditions without fear of damaging my camera. I'm pretty pleased with the shots I got, my Ziploc bag weather sealing worked out incredibly well. Although, I did end up damaging the hot shoe on my a6000 after placing an old Minolta Auto32 strobe on it. I know better than to put old strobes on cameras without checking the voltage output first. I made the mistake of thinking I had used the strobe on the a6000 before, but hindsight is always 20/20, and I had only ever used it on mounted on a wireless receiver. So now I have a 24 megapixel version of the a5000. Development was easy breezy. I got myself a cheap old GAF Anscomatic spinner tank where the agitator doubles as a thermometer and it accepts 1 roll of various sizes of film. The spiral was way easier to load than I had anticipated. I also picked up a bottle of Ilfosol S developer and a bottle of iIford rapid fixer. I read the instructions on the tank, film, developer and fixer. Then came up with a plan and went to town. I spent an entire day playing with digitization techniques and realized there is a lot of manipulation that can be done in the digitization process. With theses images I was just going for a clean and easy digitization, something along the lines of what you would get with a film scanner. To digitize the images on this contact sheet. I setup two light stands at the same height. Clamped one end of the filmstrip to one light stand and the other end to the other light stand. I placed the light stands far enough apart so that the film was stretched out taut and level between them. I placed a small table about 16” inches below the stretched film and placed a sheet of solid white 8.5x11 generic printer paper on the table below the negative. I put my a6000 with a macro lens attached on a tripod and set it up so I was shooting down on to the negative making sure the white sheet of paper was sitting directly below the negative I was shooting. When focusing the negatives I found it easier to focus on the dust and scratches than any other part of the negative. Then I took a strobe and pointed at the paper as as I shot the negative. It seemed to work pretty well. Using this technique it took me less than 10 minutes to digitize the whole roll. The aperture on the macro lens was set to f8 (where most lenses resolve best) and the helicoid was extended to 1:2 which is max for my lens without the “lifesize” 1:1 adapter or a set of macro rings. The negative filled about 85% of the aps-c sensor, so the digitizations are roughly 20 megapixels.
