The magnificent and fascinating Cathedral & Abbey Church at St Albans, Hertfordshire. The East wall of the South Transept is the oldest part of the building with it containing work from the 8th Century. The 11th Century Crossing Tower, a local landmark, is built of recycled out of Roman Brick from the nearby Roman City of Verulamium (now non-existent). The Great Crossing Tower is 43.9m (144ft) high and is the only remaining Cathedral crossing tower from the 11th Century. Lord Grimthorpe was responsible for restoring the then Abbey to Cathedral standard in the 19th Century and the controversial West Front is his work. Also, the massive South Transept Window is also his work! A fine Cathedral and is well worth a visit. As you can see from this view, the Nave is incredibly long, the longest in the UK. The Cathedral itself is the 2nd Longest Medieval Cathedral in the UK after Winchester. (Liverpool is longer but it is not medieval)
