“One sees great things from the valley; only small things from the peak.” ~G.K. Chesterton Mono Lake, east of the Sierra Nevada in California, is a stunning 66 square mile alkaline lake. The alkaline water precipitates carbonate, creating tufa - up to 30 feet high. Although barely noticeable from the highway above the lake, at shore level, they create a magical forest of rock. At sunrise, I had them to myself - a once in a lifetime experience. Mono Lake was almost destroyed by humanity. After a stable existence for 750,000 years, water volume decreased by 50% between 1941 and 1990, when Los Angeles (350 miles away) diverted the tributary streams to meet their water needs. After a decade long legal battle, Mono Lake was finally protected in 1994. Since then, the water level was slowly increasing - until drought/climate change drastically decreased snowfall in the Sierra Nevada. In 2015, the water level was back down to 1995 levels. The future of the lake - unknown! Road trip Day 7
