Yesterday it rained in the Mojave and the wind gusted to maybe 50 mph. It was heavily overcast; but hoping for the best, I saw this place with some interesting rock formations a couple of miles off the road. I decided to try to get over there and spend the night in hopes that the storm would have blown over by dawn. I drove up a sandy wash for a while and then about a mile along rutted double track until I got to the end. It looked like a nice, quiet place to spend the night. As sunset neared, the rain stopped and the western clouds parted to let the sunlight through. Hastily I grabbed my little Sony camera and set off down a gully looking for a shot. There was a rainbow that lasted about a minute. I got this and a few other keepers. It was dark by 6 pm. I got in the back of the truck and after a while drifted off into sleep. Around 3 am the wind was blowing strongly, shaking the truck, and I woke to hear things hitting the window. I looked out and saw that about an inch of snow had fallen already and it was coming down fast. I realized that if a couple of feet came down I could be stranded out there for a long while. It looked like this might happen. I decided to try to make it out to the highway in the dark and blowing snow. The snow had obscured the double track and I was worried about making a wrong turn and getting into more trouble than I was already in, but I didn’t see much alternative. Fortunately I made it out to the pavement, which also had an accumulation of snow. I drove down to I-40. Most of the big rigs had pulled over to the shoulder, but occasionally one would come lumbering by. Needles, CA, was about 70 miles to the east and I drove slowly in that direction. After about ten miles the snow stopped and the pavement cleared. So I made it to the Motel 6 around 5 am and booked a room for the coming night. They were nice enough to let me occupy the room immediately. Flagstaff will undoubtedly be snowed in, and the Interstate will probably close down. I’ll just stay here in my $39.00 room and enjoy the WiFi until the situation improves. Pretty exciting night.
