Large hemlocks in a ravine near the Lehigh River, Carbon County, within Riverview Park. Hemlocks are abundant in the park and the adjacent Lehigh Gap Nature Center—a surprising find in a landscape recovering from decades of vegetation-destroying zinc-smelting operations in nearby Palmerton. Perhaps even more surprising is that the trees are mostly untouched by the hemlock woolly adelgid, an exotic insect pest that has damaged or killed the hemlocks elsewhere in the area. Metal uptake by the hemlocks may provide some protection against the pest. The Lehigh Gap Nature Center Strategic Plan: 2012–2016 recommends a study to research this idea and others about why the hemlocks here are surviving.
