Yosemite National Park - Altitude at Tioga Pass - 9,943 ft (3,031m) .The road from the Pass to Hwy 395 (Mono Lake) is steep, 3,200 feet in altitude in 12 miles. Guard rails are in short supply. The Tioga Road was originally built as a mining road in 1882-83. Yosemite began about 500 million years ago when the Sierra Nevada region lay beneath an ancient sea. Thick layers of sediment lay on the sea bed, which eventually were folded and twisted and thrust above sea level. At the same time molten rock welled up from deep with the earth and slowly cooled beneath the layers of sediment to form granite. Millions of years of erosion has gradually worn away nearly all of the overlying rock and exposed the fantastic granite formation that can be seen from the Tioga Pass Road.
