Back in the 1970's, Snooker used to be as much of a passion of mine as photography (until I started needed to wear spectacles, in fact). This "selfie" was shot in 1981 at Bury Snooker Club (North Manchester), which happened to be only 50 yards from the Police Station from which I worked (and where I lived at the time) - in fact I'm wearing one of the old-style blue Police shirts in this shot LOL. This image taken on Kodachrome Professional 64 ASA 35mm transparency film, using my Olympus OM2n and a Vivitar 24mm lens at f22 with an exposure of about 15 seconds. I used an air-pressure operated bulb release (so that I could activate the shutter release with my foot as I "broke" the balls, the tube for the shutter release running back under the table from the tripod-mounted camera at the far end from me), to avoid my having to move more than was necessary to actually "break" the balls. I shot a whole roll of film in this way with exposures between 2 and 20 seconds, trying different apertures and different exposure times. Although this was the sort of effect I was after, the ghosting effect seen here was something of an unanticipated (but pleasing) consequence of the balls moving different distances when struck, at different speeds, and some coming almost to rest (or completely) before the exposure finished. Whilst most of the frames I shot were usable, very few had this effect, which was an unpredictable product of how hard I struck the white, how far the reds, in particular, travelled during the exposure and how long they were stationary before the exposure finished. Today, with my D2X, I'd need an accomplice to actually operate the shutter-release, I suspect, as my electronic wireless shutter release won't do "bulb" :)
