Canadian Museum of Nature, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Feldspar and Quartz are the two most abundant minerals in the Earth's crust. Here, Tourmaline (a boron-enriched silicate mineral) adds an exotic touch. Coarse-grained grey Quartz + white Feldspar + black Tourmaline pegmatite vein is crosscutting what appears to be a fine-grained to porphyritic diorite. Pegmatites have the ability to collect a bunch of elements, making them the "garbage cans" of the Earth. Complex, zoned pegmatites in Brazil, California, Maine and elsewhere are mined for fancy mineral specimens and beautiful gemstones. However, quartz-feldspar-mica or QFM pegmatite is by far and away the most typical pegmatite intrusion, but nowhere near as pretty as this.
