BioShock is a first-person shooter video game set in the dystopian underwater city of "Rapture." It's an exceptionally creepy universe, despite the awe inspiring Art Deco and Steampunk visuals. The syringe is used by "little sisters" who harvest a highly valuable serum of "ADAM," stem cells which have the capacity to regenerate damaged tissue. It's complicated in a way only teenagers can understand. But a game is just a game. The fun thing for us was the experience of creating the stage prop. A little later I'm going to post some of the production photos. In short, the central element is a resin casting of a old gas pump dispenser (the lever is actually from the brass original); extensions are PVC pipe; the "needle" is a wooden dowel, sanded to shape; the top extension holds an red LED light from an emergency light; the bottle is from Italian sea salt, purchased at Whole Foods, filled with Karo syrup and red food coloring. The top is from a baby bottle. It's all held together with various epoxies and JB Weld.
