1. In image areas of high contrast or low detail, the noise reduction software that I tested can do a remarkable job, reducing noise to that of an image taken two or three stops lower in ISO. DxO Optics Pro 9 with the PRIME button selected did the best job, but processing time was several to many minutes per image. Nik Define2 did almost as good a job, but the results were less crisp than DxO. Sometimes this might make for a better image. 2. In areas of low contrast and high detail, image noise can overwhelm detail structure. In extreme cases, the detail comes to be obliterated. No noise reduction software can cope well with this situation. I found that DxO (with PRIME selected) ded a better job of preserving detail structure. Nik Dfine2 images looked mushy in these areas. 3. There is no substitute for a crisp, well-exposed image made at a low ISO value. No noise reduction software can turn a noisy image into something that looks like one of these images. 4. Some people will fave ANYTHING.
