The Cathedral, seen on a glorious October day, has a long history with several catastrophic events. The Cathedral was built around 1075 as the new Cathedral for the Diocese, replacing the old Cathedral at nearby Selsey. In 1187, a large fire destroyed the roof and towers, and much of the city too. In the 13th century, the large Central Tower was completed, and the spire completed some 100 years later. The four towers of the Cathedral have a particularly disastrous history due to subsidence. The South West Tower collapsed in 1210, the NW Tower collapsed in the 1700s and was not rebuilt on 1910. The most disastrous event occurred in 1861, when the medieval Central Tower and Spire collapsed in on itself, destroying the crossing. It was rebuilt in the same style. The Cathedral is beautiful, and has many very early Gothic work intertwined with some Norman work.
