St James's is the largest church in Poole and is a magnificent example of Georgian architecture. It was built in the year beginning 1820. The church is located in the historic quarter of the town, near Poole Quay. The church has long been associated with the local fishing trade and is known locally as 'the fishermen's church'. The church has an unusual weather vane fashioned in the shape of a fish. English Heritage have designated it a Grade II* listed building. The large tower contains a beautiful ring of 10 bells, the back 8 cast in 1821 by William Dobson. They were augmented to 10 in 1937 by two bells from Mears & Stainbank.
