The other day one of my friends came over for coffee and brought a surprise with him. It was his roommates dog, Ripley! Ripley is a boxer and she is super affectionate, within about the first two minutes of meeting her she was trying to jump up I'm my lap and lick my face. Since flickr users really seem to like their dog portraits I figured I would set up some lighting and take a few shots, it was also a chance to play with a lens I've had for a while but have never really used. These weren't all my favorite photos of her, but they were the ones that applied well to a triptych. I would rather not post a bunch of single photos from the same shoot and a triptych comprised of 8x10's seems to be a good way around that. I left the drool and tears in these photos because they seem like interesting details to me, but I will definitely take them out of the shots that I send to the owner. When I shoot dogs I always setup and test my camera and lighting before I attempt to shoot them, some dogs really have a short attention span while posing so I like to get it over with quickly. I always try to get the dogs up on a table, so they feel more comfortable staying where they are than jumping off. This time I was lucky and I had a friend to direct the dogs poses using treats which left me free to shoot hand-held, move around and adjust the focus as I went along. This has to be one of my favorite lighting setups that I have used so far. I've used this setup to shoot head shots of people and this setup seems provides a very “photoshopped” and hyper realistic look straight out of camera. When I have shot with this setup in the past the photos seem to need little to no processing or retouching at all. For lighting I have used a mix of continuous lighting and strobes. I used a homemade ring light that I constructed out of two well used mountain bike tires(one stuffed inside the other for rigidity), a cut up extension cord, a hand full of marettes, 8 “pigtail” type light sockets affixed to the bicycle tire with tye wraps (zap/zip straps) and of course 8 6500k compact fluorescent light bulbs. I use this light as a fill light and to throw an abnormal/intense catch in the subjects eyes. For these shots...I positioned it aligned between the camera and the subject, so I can shoot through the center of it. I placed a 8”x8”soft box as a key light between the ring light and the subject hanging down from the ceiling just out the frame, pointing at the front/top of the subjects head with a Yongnuo yn-460ii inside. I placed a Minolta 4000af in a 3'x2' softbox to the rear left of the subject pointing at the subject at a 45 degree angle. And a Yongnuo yn-560ii in a 3'x2' soft box placed to the rear right of the subject pointing at the subject at a 45 degree angle. These are used to provide a sort of rim on the subject and separate the subject from the background. The strobes were triggered using a PT-04 trigger/receiver set.
