This is the first of many star shots that I'll be posting from my recent trip to Moab. This one is of Mesa Arch, in the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park. It was taken about five days after full moon, a few hours after sunset but before moonrise. I'll post a shot from the same position taken after moonrise next. Here are the particulars for this exposure: Nikon D800E Nikon 28mm f/2.8 ai-s lens at f/2.8 20 sec. exposure at ISO 6400 This is a single exposure, not HDR or a composite. I placed a fluorescent camping lantern to the left of the camera on the ground, about 20 feet in front of the arch, for illumination. Without the light, it was too dark to see anything in the foreground. Even with the light, the arch was barely visible. Eventually I should have a time-lapse sequence ready. The big light in the sky is a planet (Jupiter?), not the moon.
