Yesterday I drove up to the Lybrook Badlands just to get out of the house. I took the DJI quadcopter. This shot was taken about 200 feet above where I was standing. The Lybrook Badlands is a strip of eroded cliffs that runs north-south to the west of US highway 550, starting south of Counselor and running up to north of Lybrook. The mile marker on 550 is around 100. The area west of the highway is mostly BLM land with a few Navajo holdings here and there. There are no signs; it's mostly BLM land that has been extensively developed for gas and oil extraction. Because of the gas and oil industry, the area is riddled with crisscrossing dirt roads of varying quality. When the roads get wet, they are mostly impassable without a 4WD vehicle, and even then you might get mired axle-deep in mud. When dry, the roads are navigable by a high-clearance vehicle. Here's how to get to the north end, where I took this shot. North of milepost 112 on US550, turn left (south) on the paved road with signs for Chaco. After 5.0 miles, ignore the right turn sign for Chaco and continue straight. After 0.1 mile, turn left (east) on a dirt road. Travel 5.6 miles east on this gradually deteriorating road. Then, just after descending a short but steep hill and crossing an arroyo, turn left (north) on a dirt road. (There are several roads crossing in this area, and if you take the wrong one it should soon become apparent.) Go 0.8 mile, almost to the end, and park. Get out and walk to the north and east along a dry stream bed (several to choose from) for about 0.5 mile. You should start seeing rock formations along the way. In front of you, the Lybrook communication towers rise from the cliff. You can get a nice view from the overlook at the top of this cliff, but you can't get there from where you are without climbing gear. To get to the overlook, return to Lybrook on US 550 and head north. Just past the refinery, the road takes a curve to the left (west). Immediately after the curve, and before the grocery store, turn left (south) on a dirt road. It's easy to miss it. Continue south on this road. Eventually it takes you to the towers. There's a better viewpoint if you turn right before you reach the towers and drive west for about half a mile, where the road ends at the overlook. This road is terrible, and you might not make it. There are other areas to the south, which can be reached by taking a dirt road west in Counselor, around milepost 99. Drive for 5 or 6 miles, keeping an eye out to the right.
