According to Greek mythology Orpheus came from Thrace, where "barbarians" were based. They worshiped Dionysus, the god of wine. The heady feelings were explained with divine effect. There was something magical about euphoria as it fueled worry and wild action. The cult of Dionysus finally sloshed over to Greece, where it aroused enthusiasm as well as aversion because it contained disturbing elements. At bizarre festivals, to the annoyance of a number of husbands, their wives danced naked throughout the night in nature, some falling mad and eating bloody meat from wild animals. The homage of Dionysus illustrated what archaic in man threatened a civilized society: the suppressed will to savagery and the inclination to lust, which can be very ruthless.
