Finnich Gorge is a hidden gem unknown to the many who pass on the road from Glasgow to Loch Lomond which travels across a bridge a few hundred feet above. The Gorge is blocked from view by dense trees and the lack of a nearby parking area makes it doubly inaccessible. It is also not signposted. Combine all these factors with a walk into dense woodland to find the hidden Devil's Staircase, a 300 year old crumbling near vertical stair cut into the rock which leads down a narrow fissure in the rock, to the foot of the Gorge, an almost magical place shrouded in a dark and mysterious history. Within the Gorge is the Devil's Pulpit, a large flat topped rock used by Druid priests some 2 to 3 thousand years ago as an altar stone. If there was the be a signpost what would it say? 'Here be Devils'. : ) The Gorge was the setting for the final battle scenes of the film, The Eagle, which tells a story of the disappearance of the Roman 9th Legion, which marched north from England to invade Caledonia (Scotland) and was never seen again. Rumour had it that it got trapped in a Scottish glen and was wiped out to the last man by the Pictish Tribes. As a result the Roman Emperor Hadrian built a wall to keep us out, Hadrian's Wall. When you stand deep in the Gorge the silence is eerie, you can almost hear the ghosts.
