Deutsches Erdölmuseum The substructure of a derrick has to be of a certain height, to allow the installation of safety equipment on the well head. This one has a height of 9 metres. The safety devices are needed to shut off the well in if an influx into the borehole from the formations overcomes the hydrostatic pressure of the mud column. In the worst case a blowout may occur when the fluids are 'blowing out' of the well uncontrolled. This installation was made in 1961 to the American Petroleum Institute specifications.
