Machynlleth is a small market town with a population of some 2,000. It stands at the head of the beautiful Dyfi estuary in Powys, Mid Wales. Machynlleth is well-known to tourists as "the Town with the Clock". This landmark, formally called the Castlereagh Memorial Clock was built in 1873 to mark the 21st birthday of Viscount Castlereagh, whose family seat was Y Plas, a Grade II listed Georgian mansion. Formerly the home of the Marquess of Londonderry, the property was left to the people of Machynlleth in 1948 Architect Henry Kennedy of London designed the tower. It was built by Edward Edwards a local builder. It was made mostly of stone from Tremadog, near Porthmadog, complemented by red sandstone from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. The tower stands 24 metres high, from the base to the weathervane. I had awful trouble getting this shot, there were traffic lights and street signs in the way. In the end I settled for the tree on the left as it looked much nicer than all the street furniture.
