The day was stormy as we drove from Provence to Nice via the mountainous Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, but it was still stunning - definitely on my "hope to return here someday" list. The town of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is nestled against the cliffs, complete with cascading stream and waterfall splitting the town. The sun nicely cooperated by poking its head out briefly so I could grab this shot. If you look closely, there is a yellow star hanging between the cliffs. It was hung in the 10th century, supposedly by a local Cruscader who vowed to hang a star over his village if he was able to escape from the Saracens and return. These days it is replaced as needed by helicopter, but no one knows how it was first hung over 1000 years ago.
