After a walk over green grass having a rest under the triplet-trees, I suddenly heard the word: “boring!”. So I turned my head and looked around. Nobody there, except another sigh: “hoow boooring!”. “Who is there?” I asked into the space. “Just me.” the answer came back right from underneath. “You are a bench?” I asked, wondering. “No, …”, it grumbled “I aaam Mark, my name is Mark, bench is just what you humans name me”. “So you are a benchmark.” I chuckled, trying to place a joke. Not a good idea as I immediately noticed. “Exactly and not funny!” it came back, sharp and earnest. “You may find it amusing, but I have to live with it!” “I’m sorry” I replied with an innocent voice. Too late I noticed as the flood came: “Aaallll day I have to compare,.. how is today?, how was yesterday? what is? what is not? is this good? is that better? what do others have? what I not? why is this? why not that?...” “Ok, ok!” I tried to rein. “But why do you do so?” “Because that is what a benchmark does! Don’t you know? A father explained it to his son right here on a sunny day, 3 years ago. Since then I try to do what is expected from me. I am a benchmark. I compare! The more the better!” a proud, but not happy voice yelled at me. “Ohh nooo” I said, “You made a big mistake! You are “the bench” Mark, not a benchmark! You only have to do what a bench does and what a bench does, lies within you. You will know it, if you just listen to yourself instead of others!” What then followed was silence. Pure silence. So I sat there and enjoyed the view, the sounds of the birds, my time and the silence from underneath. But just before I left again, in the mean time well rested, I heard: “I must think.” A few weeks later I came to the same spot underneath the trees and took a seat again. I was curious. And then I heard again this voice: “Now I know! These will be the last words you are going to hear from me because I am a bench and benches do not speak! But this is what I found out: My mother was a tree, so my nature is just to be, feel and withstand the forces life throws at me. I am here to fill out the space and time which was given to me. I don't have to do more than I am able to and if I want to compare, I can do it with myself. I can and shall be happy. And if somebody comes and asks why I don't “benchmark” I could but will not reply: I don’t have to. I am, and that is what I do!” These were the last words I heard from bench Mark.
