Moss-covered log, Clinton County–Potter County line, within the Forrest H. Dutlinger Natural Area of Susquehannock State Forest. Shot with a magenta filter. The Allegheny Plateau region of north-central Pennsylvania was once called the Black Forest because of its dense stands of old-growth hemlocks, white pines, and northern hardwoods. Most of the forest was logged off by the early twentieth century. Only isolated pockets of the forest were spared, often because of difficult-to-access terrain or property-boundary disputes. The natural area protects a remnant of the virgin forest. Most of the white pines (highly prized for timber) were logged off; however, the hemlocks and northern hardwoods were spared.
