The famous Spanish Dollar, or Piece of Eight, was legal tender in the US until 1857. It was often cut into 8 wedges to make small change which is why you hear the quarter referred to as ``2 bits``. You can tell that this one circulated in Asia because of the ``chop marks`` made by Chinese merchants after they verified the coin as genuine.
