The bronze bear in front of the Office of the Governor of California was dubbed "Bacteria Bear" by California Highway Patrol Officers who guard the State Capitol; schoolchildren can't resist touching the statue. The bear belongs former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who lent it to the Capitol indefinitely for lack of a better place to put it. According to KGO TV, Capitol reporters called the bear 'Mic' because it was convenient place to put microphones when waiting for Schwarzenegger to come out and talk. The work by artist Steven Bennett was purchased by Schwarzenegger in 2009 and has been in this hallway ever since. The grizzly bear adorns the state flag and is the official state animal, although it has been extinct in California since 1924.
