Yesterday I drove up to hoodooland and spent a few hours walking around, looking for something new. It was very windy and the sky was mostly overcast, so eventually I decided just to head back home. On these kinds of days, you never know about how the sunset will turn out. Just a bit of clearing in the far west as the sun goes down can make a spectacular sunset, but more often than not, it just gets grayer as darkness comes in. After a few moments of consideration, I decided not to wait around. Sure enough, as I was driving back the western sky opened up just a crack along the horizon. I quickly took the Ah-shi-sle-pah turnoff and parked, hurriedly grabbing my camera and tripod and climbing down into the wash. As the sky began to glow, I attached my camera to the tripod and -- Yikes!! -- the mounting plate that goes on the camera wasn't there. I had removed it a few days ago and forgot to reattach it. So the tripod was useless. It was too dark for handheld work, so I looked around and found a big flat rock nearby. I took this shot with the camera resting on that rock.
