First nine digits of Pi: 3.141592653, shot on 3/15/15 at 9:26:53 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time. In my book, that's as good a reason as any to eat pie for breakfast. Pi Day 2015 is the only Pi Day this century that will actually reflect the first five numbers in pi, which is 3.1415. The next time this happens will be March 14, 2115. The pie will have gone stale by then, so bon appétit! Pi trivia: Albert Einstein was born on Pi Day, March 14, 1879, Ulm, Germany. The earliest known official or large-scale celebration of Pi Day was organized by Larry Shaw in 1988 at the San Francisco Exploratorium, with staff and public marching around one of its circular spaces, then consuming fruit pies. The Exploratorium holds its 27th annual Pi Day celebration today. Star Trek’s Mr. Spock knew the value of pi. In the “Wolf in the Fold” TV episode, Spock thwarts an evil entity inside the Enterprise’s computer system by ordering it to “compute to last digit the value of pi,” which can never be computed.
