If you are looking for a real “high”-way, there are some options to go for. One would be the Leh-Manali Highway in Northern India which connects Leh, the capital of the former Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh with Manali. After all it is Himalaya my friend, so we do expect some height. On average you will travel above 4000m (13.000 feet) with passes as high as 5.328m (Taglang La). Due to snowfall and harsh winters this 490 km highway is only open for about four and a half months a year. The road condition is not similar to highways we usually roll our tyres on, so give yourself at least two days or more, to be able to enjoy this route. Many small streams of ice-cold water from snow-capped mountains and glacial melts cross the road. You should feel comfortable to have a splash through these. You also will have the possibility to share this road with lots of Lorries and some military vehicles, some of these encounters are quite exciting as you can see in the picture. But why all this hassle if Leh has an airport you ask? Awesome and breath-catching scenery and not-even-thought-of surprises behind many bends. That´s why!
