Sunbeam Alpine 1966 Manufacturer: Rootes Group (England) Type: Alpine Series V Engine: 1725 cc, ohv I-4 Power: 92 SAE HP (claimed) Top speed: 160 km/h (theoretically) Production time: 1965-1968 Production outlet: 19,122 units Curb weight: 1010 kg Special: - The Alpine’s sibling was the Tiger, externally identical but equipped with a Ford V8 - MGB outsold the Alpine 8:1 back in the day; few survivors still on the road today This one was my daily driver, photographed in 1977 a 126-format Instamatic. Scan from a very faded 3-1/2 inch machine print I bought it from its original owner in the Oakland Hills and drove it for almost a year. The Sunbeam rode nice, handled well, and looked good inside and out. Unfortunately, the good looks were skin deep. Characteristic of Rootes Group products, it was under-engineered and mechanically fragile. After the second engine blew up, I replaced with a much more reliable MGB. I would have loved a Sunbeam Tiger, but they were (and remain) way out of my price range. By the way, the format for thumbnail specifications is inspired by the postings of Clay, Le Photiste, www.flickr.com/photos/photiste/ a Flickr community member and knowledgeable automobile enthusiast based in The Netherlands. I home others will follow suit on their own postings of classic and vintage cars.
