The tule elk (Cervus canadensis ssp. nannodes) is the smallest subspecies of the American elk and is only found only in California. Upon the arrival of Europeans to North America, it is estimated a half-million roamed California. Unfortunately, these fine animals had the tragic characteristic of being yummy in a time when the bounty of the planet was assumed to be limitless. All tule elk today are descendent from a single breeding pair discovered in the San Joaquin Valley after the subspecies was assumed to be extinct. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates there are 4,000 individuals in the wild today as a result of relentless conservation efforts.
