The Bealach Na Ba (literally "Pass of the Cattle"), an old drovers road leading from Loch Kishorn over the mountains to Applecross. This spectacular route comprises the greatest climb of any road in the UK, rising well over 2000 feet from sea level at Applecross to the top of the pass and then back down to sea level at Loch Kishorn the other side. It's often closed by snow in winter and a tricky drive in the best of conditions, with narrow hairpins both sides of the summit. That summit, however, boasts a spectacular view of the Cuillins Hills on Skye and, if you're lucky, a wonderful sunset to boot. On this trip we drove to the summit three times in the hope of a good sunset, or at least a reasonably clear view of the Cuillins, but were defeated by the weather on all three occasions. This shot was hand-held in driving rain.
