It was getting late in the afternoon and we had to decide whether to drive out to Sequoia National Park or spend the night in Visalia and go the next morning. We took a chance and drove out. At the entrance station the ranger told us that we were required to have tire chains in order to enter the park. I did have some chains in the back of the truck. The sky was cloudy but the air was clear and it was too warm for snow to be on the ground. We spent the next hour driving up the winding road into the mountains. We were racing against the darkness to get to the General Sherman area and were lucky that the three miles of road construction (one-hour delays) were not going on (Sunday) and that we didn't find a single RV chugging along in front of us with miles and miles of double yellow lines. Eventually we saw a "Chains Required Beyond This Point" sign but the road still looked pretty good, so we continued on. Then there was some ice on the road in shady patches. Then another "Chains Required ..." sign. Then a little more snow and ice. If we stopped, we might as well turn around. About a half hour before sunset, we reached the General Sherman area. We took some quick shots although the light wasn't especially good due to the overcast sky. The Congress Trail was icy and slippery. I remembered the Yakk Trax that I had stowed under the driver's seat five years ago and had never used. I went back to the truck and put them on my shoes. They worked like a charm. Just before sunset, the clouds began to part on the western horizon and we got a few minutes of beautiful light. We decided not to return the next morning.
