Pinchot State Forest, Lackawanna County. The natural area protects a small, relict boreal conifer bog in a mountain basin. Black spruce (Picea mariana), growing from a thick blanket of sphagnum moss, is the predominant tree species. Access into the bog is limited. A few deer trails (or bear trails, perhaps) enter the periphery of the bog from Tannery Road but quickly vanish into the mire. Surrounding the core of the bog (and forming a nearly impenetrable barrier) are dense thickets of highbush blueberry and other shrubs.
