Hemlock palustrine forest at the headwaters of Spruce Run, a mountain stream in Bald Eagle State Forest, Union County. In the foreground is a large white pine. Although the deep shade cast by the hemlock canopy largely inhibits the growth of other trees, scattered canopy breaks permit white pines and some hardwoods (sweet birches, northern red oaks, and others) to take hold.
