Hardwoods along the Black Forest Trail, Lycoming County, within Tiadaghton State Forest. The name Black Forest was given to the Allegheny Plateau of north-central Pennsylvania because of the region's once-extensive stands of old-growth hemlocks, white pines, and other conifers. Most of the forest was logged off by the early twentieth century. Scattered remnants of virgin timber are preserved as state forest natural areas.
