A photo of renowned traditional Kalinga tattoo artist Whang-od Oggay when I visited her home in Barangay Buscalan, Tinglayan, Kalinga, Philippines. At over 100 years old, she is described as the "oldest" and the "last" "mambabatok" (traditional Kalinga tattoist). She is a member of the Butbut tribe of the Kalinga ethnic group. In the old days, to have a traditional tattoo, one must be a member of the tribe. There are varying patterns and sizes of the tattoos depending of one's standing in the tribe, whether he/she have proven himself/herself, or how many he has killed in tribal wars. Up until the American occupation of the Philippines, tribal head hunting is common in the highlands of the Cordilleras.
