Construction of the 158-foot control tower began in early 1941. At the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor the tower structure had been completed along with a portion of the platform on the top. Construction was completed in 1942 and originally was painted a solid dark color. The control tower didn't receive it's familiar red and white paint until 1942. After the Ford Island Naval Air Station was decommissioned in 1962 the control tower was still used for civilian operations at the field. Plans are in place to restore the control tower and clean up asbestos within the structure which would allow public access. The last time the control tower was painted was for the production of the movie "Tora Tora Tora".
