A lovely evening in November at the top of Gallowlaw in the Irvine Valley. Gallowlaw Cairn is sited in a commanding position above the towns of Galston and Newmilns, looking out over the Irvine Valley, and giving lovely views of Arran and the Firth of Clyde. On a, exceptionally clear day you can even see the Nevis Range in the Highlands. Originally a 50' megalithic stone circle apparently stood around this spot, but there is little trace of it today. A gallows is said to have stood here and human bones have been found, presumably from executed criminals. The existing monument shown here was built in the 1920's by striking miners to commemorate the Covenanters who died for religious freedom in the 17th Century. An adjacent marble plaque is inscribed "Gallow Hill Cairn, 1926. To the memory of James Smith of Threepwood, who died for civil and religious liberty, 1684". The Miners also created a number of other inscriptions using pebbles set into mortar (bottom left), and originally placed mirrored glass into the cairn to catch the sunlight. There is a circular disc with view lines on the top face of the cairn (now curiously misaligned). The town of Galston can be seen down in the valley, with Arran and the Firth of Clyde in the distance.
