Greymouth was the busy hub of a local rail network before the opening of the Otira Tunnel in 1923. It has been the district headquarters of railway operations on the West Coast and a busy passenger station for over 100 years. The district’s industrial heyday has gone but the railway remains an important part of the West Coast infrastructure, particularly with the success of the TranzAlpine express and export coal to Lyttelton. There is another signal box of this design at Port Lyttleton Christchurch.
