I shot nothing today, so here’s one from the archives: Reporter David Zucchino (far, far right) and photographer Rick Loomis (next to Zucchino) interview Air Force surgeons at the Air Force Theater Hospital, Balad Air Base, Iraq on Nov. 5, 2005. The surgions view a CAT scan while discussing how they will treat a soldier wounded in an enemy attack. Wounded soldiers who arrive as the theater hospital alive have better than a 98.5 percent chance of leaving alive. This unpresident war-time survival rate is a result of the exceptional training of battlefield medics, deployment of a world-class trauma center to the heart of the combat zone and extremely rapid transport from point of injury to definite treatment in the U.S. or Germany. In 2007 the hospital moved from tents to a building. I took this photo of the Los Angeles Times’ journalists on my first full tour in Iraq. My image is just a tiny little slice of time. If you want to see stunning photos, check out Rick’s images, which are still on line at the LA Times.
