Old-growth forest, Columbia County, within the Jakey Hollow Natural Area of Weiser State Forest. The natural area protects a 59-acre tract of old-growth hemlocks, white pines, and northern hardwoods in a deep ravine. The photo shows young trees (mostly American beeches) growing amid much larger, older trees (mostly hemlocks and white pines). Old-growth forests are characterized by a mix of tree ages and sizes. When a large tree falls, the break in the canopy allows light to reach the formerly shaded forest floor. Tree seedlings, responding to the light, will readily grow.
