Swallow-tailed Gulls nest mostly in the Galapagos. This adult is in breeding plumage with a dark head and red eye ring. This is the only fully nocturnal gull, feeding mainly on squid and fish at night - this explains its large eyes compared to other gulls. When the young have fledged, the gulls are totally pelagic, flying, fishing and eating over the open oceans. They return to the same nest sites usually meeting the same mate. There is no set breeding season for these gulls and it has been reported they mate on a 10 month cycle!
