This is a water vole swimming in the river Itchen. An animal that is starting to become rare in Britain with numbers down 20% since 2011 (and 90% since the 1970's). I spoke to someone from our village in the Spring about letting his dog off the leash by the river and allowing it to go off playing in the reed beds and chasing any animals living on the river banks. I mentioned the nearby kingfishers and water voles. His reply, "They'll just move somewhere else!" We often think that we need more education to protect our wildlife. I think it is much more difficult than that. It is a new culture, a change of behaviour - something not achieved by passing information.
