On this Memorial Day, I am thinking of my uncle SC2 Donald Conser, who was a cook aboard the USS Indianapolis (CA-35). After delivering the atomic bomb to Tinian, the ship set sail for the Philippines. An Imperial Japanese submarine attacked the Indianapolis in the moonlit wee hours of July 30, 1945. She sank in 12 minutes. Of the 1,196 sailors and Marines aboard, only 316 were rescued. My uncle was not among the survivors and is still at sea. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Indianapolis_(CA-35)
