Deutsches Erdölmuseum Pigs are devices for cleaning and controlling pipelines. They are moved through the pipes by the flowing gas or liquid. Furthermore, some complex systems are used to control large diameter underground pipelines, like this electrical crack-detection-pig. This system was in service in the Nord-West-Oelleitung (NWO) company in an oil pipeline with a diameter of 28 inches. The pig was regularly used to search for damage in the pipe. The electronic devices in this particular pig were able to distinguish between cracks and welding roots. It was manufactured in 1976.
