Cotopaxi (5897m). For a short time, and from a certain perspective, the rising moon may be seen as head whilst the snow of Cotopaxi turns into a Poncho. It is claimed that the word Cotopaxi means: “Neck of the Moon” in an indigenous language (unproven). For local Andean people it is a sacred mountain though, and this since long before the Inca´s arrived. Gods live here and it serves as “rain sender” which guarantees the land´s fertility. For Alexander von Humboldt, the first European who tried to climb this mountain on the 28th of April 1802, it was the “most beautiful cone of the world.” He reached a height of about 4500m as he had to return because of heavy snowfall from the days before. “Poor Joseph, who carried the barometer, suffered a lot. Barefooted he walked three hours long on the snow and did still not lose his cheerfulness.” Humboldt remarked in his notes. For geographers Cotopaxi is a stratovolcano (like Fujisan in Japan, Mount St. Helens in North America or the Vesuv in Italy), and one of the highest active volcanoes in the world (after Ojos del Salado). Since 1738, Cotopaxi has erupted more than 50 times, resulting in the creation of numerous valleys formed by lahars (mudflows) around the volcano. In the picture you can spot these lahars and the road going up to a carpark at 4600m, just below the José F. Ribas Refuge. From here climbers begin their summit, usually short after midnight.
